Ray Friel Centre

Those Present:

Zybina Richards, Don Pottier, Tosha Rhodenizer (Serco), Doug Feltmate (Design Food Systems), Suzanne Sanford (City of Ottawa), Louise Lapensée, Rick Snell, Marc Cappelli, Sonia Brereton, Down Stroz, David Villeneuve, George Blake, Brenda Spearman, Dan Brisebois (City of Ottawa)

New Executive Officers

The Class A directors that were acclaimed at the May annual general meeting were introduced, and their officer positions were defined:

• Zybina Richards (President)
• Brenda Spearman (Vice President)
• Don Pottier (Treasurer)
• David Villeneuve (Secretary) (David has held all 4 officer positions)

Ray Friel Centre (Tosha Rhodenizer, Serco)

• 10 day opening celebration in August for 2 new ice surfaces
• Installing complete IT system
• Teletrax telephone registration for programs

Tenth Line Piazza Restaurant (Doug Feltmate, Design Food Systems)

• Design Foods operates the Piazza and the cafe, as well as hundreds of restaurants around the world
• Doug lives in Fallingbrook
• Introducing loyalty programs for groups
• Tries to hire local youth, still looking for some more
• Serves breakfast on weekends, no lunches, open again 4:30 pm
• Serves Starbucks coffee because they support Fair Trade
• Piazza will do almost all catering in Ray Friel Centre, except kosher/halall events

Petrie Island Outdoors Club (Rick Snell, PIOC)

• PIOC grew out of FCA meeting last year
• 20-30 people attend each Thursday night event at Petrie Island
• They lack sufficient boats to serve everyone
• Rented boats through Petrie Island Bait and Tackle Shop (Yves Grandmaitre)
• PIOC is a non profit corporation, www.pioc.ca
• Will do cross country skiing during winter
• 47 members paid up for 2005-06
• Maybe will see a club house in the future
• Dan says City is forming a committee to look at governance of Petrie Island, i.e. how to run it.  They are looking for FCA representation.
• Dan - SPIRIT is the program funded by Ontario grant, run by Sonshine Families Ministries.  SPIRIT will send usage statistics to city soon. There were 0-6 kids per week signed up.
• Rick feels SPIRIT Trillium application for $100,000+ is premature since they have not finished their pilot project.
• Dawn - CIty may be tendering all activities on Petrie (canteen, volleyball, cleaning).
• Dan - This will not preclude PIOC type activities.

Petrie Island Update (Dan Brisebois, City of Ottawa Parks and Rec)

• City will run a wrap up post mortem meeting of Canada Day at Petrie in the fall, with the committee.
• Will add an additional 75 vehicle parking cell east of present ones.
• Will finish grading of east bay to remove steep drop offs.
• Drainage system will be installed under central bowl, add fresh sand.
• Looking at larger toilet facility in building, will require water and sewage lines.
• Construction of building for next spring, will need additional funding
• Old cottage was closed for safety reasons, but will not be demolished.
• Dan will provide FCA storage for Canada Day materials if the building is unusable.

Marc Godbout's Office (Sonia Brereton)

• Team Ottawa Orleans BBQ behind Cumberland Town Hall on Saturday, 11-1 pm.

Treasurer's Report (Don Pottier)

• Presented his treasurers report for year to date.
• Received net $3000 from Homeniuk amusement rides after expenses for Canada Day weekend
• Homeniuk may not be interested in returning to Ray Friel Centre next year.
• There was discussion about where they could go, maybe off Trim Road
• Don will look into who owns field south of Trim Road park-and-ride.
• Don moved to accept financial statement, seconded by George, passed.

Phil McNeeley's Office (Dawn Stroz)

• Herb Kreling has resigned as city councillor for Orleans ward.
• PIOC is working well in Phil's opinion
• Governance issues to be worked out for Petrie Island to support all user groups
• Family Health Team group practice is starting in Orleans, looking for physicians.

Rob Jellett's Office (Louise Lapensée)

• Innes Road twinning progressing
• Traffic signal at Tenth Line and Vanguard sorely needed, will be installed end of November.

City of Ottawa Recreation (Suzanne Sanford)

• 311 telephone service to access city information has been started.

Zybina Richards

• Zybina thanked Herb Kreling (who was not in attendance) for his many years of supporting the FCA, and his years of service to Orleans.  She wished him well in his future role as a justice of the peace.
• Zybina discussed the possibility of the FCA building a float for the Christmas Parade of Lights.  There was discussion about where to obtain the trailer, and how to get Sir Wil and St Pete's students.  Zybina will ask Glyn Chancey for a flatbed trailer.

Community Signs (David Villeneuve)

• David showed photos of the Fallingbrook sign that used to be at the bottom of Tenth Line hill, near the waterfall. The sign has disappeared, but the spot for it is still free.
• He showed various community signs, different formats.  Concern about vandalism.
• Suzanne says not all communities have signs.
• Dan suggested the councillors office might have money for a new sign.
• There are 4 signs presently inside Fallingbrook: 3 at the ends of Princess Louise, 1 at Gardenway.  One at Princess Louise west has fallen down.  The feeling was that these are not serving any purpose.
• David will look into a new sign at the bottom of Tenth Line hill.

Christmas Party

• George Blake offered to host the FCA Christmas party at his house.
• George will come back with a proposed date.

Adjournment

• The meeting was adjourned at 10:07 pm.
• Everyone repaired to the Piazza restaurant for free pizza, courtesy of Doug Feltmate.
